The cycling community in South Africa and abroad was shocked
and saddened by
the tragic death of Burry Stander (25), one of the
brightest cycling stars
in South Africa, who was killed during a training ride on January 3 this
year.
Velokhaya joined the thousands who paid tribute to the champion cyclist and
the contribution he had made to the sport.
Burry was a hero to many of our Velokhaya riders and his death - the result
of a road accident - has left an enormous void in our hearts. Our deepest
condolences and thoughts continue to be with his devastated family.
The safety of our cyclists on our roads has been a concern for many years,
which is why we, as Velokhaya, continue to be immensely grateful to Engen
for its sponsorship of our safe cycling programme.
This schools-based programme is essential for creating awareness among our
children of the importance of acting responsibly on the roads. Our hope is that the knowledge they gain during this programme at school, will provide a foundation for them to become responsible adult road users, both as cyclists and motorists.
Our sincere wish is that Burry's death will not be in vain and that his passing will lead to safer cycling conditions on the road.

Luthando Kaka, a member of Team Bonitas professional
road cycling team, has been selected by the Department
of Sport and Recreation as one of the top 100 most influential
sports people in South Africa during 2011.
