Getting to know Gladman:
I was born on January 16, 1965 in Port Elizabeth.
I currently live in Khayelitsha.
I am a single father of four children.
Although I do not cycle I do believe that cycling keeps you strong and fit. You do not get sick easily due to lots of exercise. It also teaches you to work as a team. Above all, you get to see lots of places.
When I was young I always wanted to ride a bike but didn't own one. One day a friend came to visit and offered me a ride on his bike. After an hour of struggling, I managed to ride and I never forgot the feeling. I eventually got my own bike when I was 16; with the help of a friend I built my first bike from old, unwanted and rusted parts.
When I am not busy doing LCA work, my hobbies include building houses, doing electrical work, tiling, carpentry and repairing of cars.
Before joining the LCA I worked as a bicycle mechanic for a number of bicycle shops. I used to fix bikes for the Ascends Club, where I met Amos, during my free time and when the LCA was formed I accepted the offer to become a permanent member of the organization because I believed in its future potential.
The busiest day at the LCA for me is a Friday before the race. I have to ensure that every participant's bike is in a good condition. It is hectic but manageable.
My job is one of the most exciting and challenging because it requires focus and attention all the time. I have to find out what the problem is with the bike because sometimes even the rider cannot identify the problem. I enjoy that challenge.
My first employer inspired me as he could tell the problem of the bike even without touching it.
'Life is a challenge and I should not give up trying' - my father used to tell me that and it's the best advice I've ever received.
I always achieve my goals when I set my mind to them. When faced with a challenge I believe in staying calm and gathering as much information as possible in order to make an informed decision.
My message to the youth is 'Don't do drugs, education and sport will help you achieve your goals'.
My wish for the LCA is for it to grow and reach an international standard. Personally, I would love to work with more pro- and international riders and grow with them all the way.
One day I would like to meet Lance Armstrong and Greg Lemond.
