The Velokhaya Cycling Centre has become a reality thanks to the generous efforts of our partners on many different levels. The first phase, the Velokhaya BMX Oval, is well on its way to being built with the track layout and surrounding building plan having been completed and work on the track itself having started in February 2008.
As part of the overall aim of the Velokhaya Cycling Center, an objective
in the planning and building of the Velokhaya BMX Oval is to establish a
facility that will measure up to local, provincial and national standards. This
is being done in order to provide top class facilities in our previously
disadvantaged communities and also to encourage participation of members of
other communities at such facilities. To this effect Velokhaya has utilized the
services of master BMX track builder Meurant Botha and legendary BMX builder and
World BMX Championship participant Swen Lauer to create a track and facility
that will measure up to our objectives.
Along with our international partners in CSC, Team CSC and Cervélo, Velokhaya has
raised the capital to complete construction on the actual track and to begin
putting the infrastructure in place around the track in order to create the
Velokhaya BMX Oval. Having received a verbal confirmation of a donation of
10 marine containers for the use of the required buildings Velokhaya is now
preparing to transform these boxes into the facilities required to support the
track.
